STRUGGLE WITH RADIO | By Sumantra Mukherjee

Internet radio has always worked to connect the lives, sentiments and emotions of the people of various communities thereby giving a launch-pad. Since the internet users in rural Assam are much less, therefore the internet radio may not be a big thing. A person in rural Assam still prefers to sit with transistor radio or commonly the radio of their phones and tune to the AIR FM station listening the songs and news updates. And our aim is to make this internet radio station “open-source”. Any person having any knowledge can volunteer to enlighten us as well as the listeners. It is the one-place where poetry, drama, songs, dance can roll without any premium terms & condition provided it does not hurt the sentiments of any. That’s how we can nurture our beautiful ethos of Assam and bring back the golden bird in front of the world.

The groundbreaking ensemble is on its first tour of North America with flowing melodies of Celtic instruments including bodhran, violin, pipes, flutes and whistles, combined with tabla, bamboo flute and Carnatic (South Indian) violin to create a powerful and organic musical experience. Tickets and more information are available at the GWU Lisner Auditorium website »

A couple of years ago, I had an opportunity to chat with Zakir just before his "Zakir Hussain & Masters of Percussion" concert in DC (you can listen to it here ») Zakir is one of the most pleasant and interesting persons to talk to. And I was eager to find out what was it that motivated him to combine Indian classical music with Celtic music - Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Breton instruments and music - a rather rare combination!
