WEST IS WEST is the sequel to the internationally acclaimed and successful film “EAST IS EAST”, a ground-breaking film which broke down cultural barriers in the UK and around the world. The first break-out multiplex hit film which dealt meaningfully with cultural diversity. Written by the same writer, also based on and inspired by autobiographical events, and produced by the same creative team, the sequel takes the Khan family on a journey from Salford, England to rural Pakistan. The original film won upwards of 36 international awards (including the BAFTA, Indian Film Festival Award, and Special Prize at Cannes where it played to a standing ovation in official selection of Director’s Fortnight). Its worldwide theatrical box-office reached $48m. Beloved of audiences around the world, this has been a dazzling cross-over British film, which has also become something of a classic, and is even a set book on the curriculum of some European schools. The sequel opened in the UK on February 25th 2011 and enjoyed the highest per screen averages in the country, beating studio pictures on release. It reached a box office of $4.5m in the UK and on its first day of dvd sales, sold 31,000 copies. It has been critically acclaimed and the majority exit poll verdicts of audiences who have seen both films is “WEST IS WEST is even better than EAST IS EAST”.

Puttanpal (Sanjay Mishra), Noori (Pragati Pandey), Nagpal (Vishwa Mohan Badola) and Gopal (Ranjan Chhabra) are the family members who try their level best to survive in this age where the prices of necessary commodities are rising by leaps and bounds. Puttanpal is a Government employee and works with the Pashu Prajnan Kendra (Animal Breeding Centre). Even after working as a Government employee, the financial troubles of his family do not decrease. Nagpal is Puttanpal’s father who cannot remember the last time he had feasted on good food. Puttanpal’s wife Noori is the owner of a beauty parlor which is located next to their house. She gives beauty tips and also some extra spicy tips to her customers at the parlor. Gopal is Puttanpal’s younger brother who has been trying to graduate from high-school for some time now and has been failing every time. However he is the darling of Puttanpal’s father. When things go astray and the family cannot sustain themselves, a colleague of Puttanpal gives them an idea - to store rations for the coming three years. What happens next and how the family fights inflation is the crux of the story.
