Madhusree Dutta’s Cinema City heading to 60th Berlin Film Festival 2010

The renowned “60th Berlin International Film Festival” of Germany has selected Indian filmmaker Madhusree Dutta’s "Cinema City” project for display.

This “installation project” will be on display in several cinema foyers, exploring questions about the relationship between urban space and cinema during the Festival in Berlin from February 11 to 21. It has been described as a project to archive the city whose identity is integrally linked with its production process of cinemas, through an inter-disciplinary network of research, productions and documentations.

Striker (2010) Hindi Movie

Sylverster Stallone did it in boxing as Rocky, and race car driving as Joe Tanto. Not to be left behind, Bollywood got Saif Ali Khan to do it as Rajveer Singh in Tara Rum Pum (DVD)  . Even Rani Mukherjee did it in Dil Bole Hadippa (DVD) !

Excellence in sports on the silver screen, combined with a story line that makes winning a game absolutely crucial for the survival of the characters on film, has been a genre used by movie makers for as long as movies are in existence. These are feel-good movies - we the audience root for the social and economic (and sometimes racial) underdog, and go home happy when the person we root for does win.

While many kinds of sporting events across the world have been exhausted by poor-guy-wins-game-makes-it-big movies, the game of Carrom is refreshing - and also very Indian.

Arekti Premer Golpo (2010)

The Kolkata Bengali Movie industry seems to have a sudden craze for alternative lifestyles. The recent flick Cha-E-Chuti, in spite of being a film that should have stood up for its skillful making and freshness, nevertheless became popular in at least some, if not most, part because of its depiction of romantic love between two women in a way that is far from the subtle portrayal of similar feelings in Nil Nirjane (Get DVD).

The new Bangla film Arekti Premer Golpo to be released in 2010 is of interest for a couple of reasons.
