Image via WikipediaWashington, DC, June 13, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) A Hinduism Summit (Hindu Dharmajagruti Sabha) will be held in the Cultural Hall of Durga Temple of Virginia in the Washington DC Metropolitan area on Saturday, 18th June 2011 (Jyeshth Krushna Trutiya, Kaliyug year 5113 as per the Hindu calendar).  This unique event will commence with Vedic recitations, lighting of an auspicious oil lamp and blowing of a conch in the tradition of Hinduism.  The Hinduism Summit will be organized by non-profit Hindu organizations, Durga Temple of Virginia and Forum for Hindu Awakening.

The Hinduism Summit will feature insightful presentations aimed at creating an understanding about Hinduism concepts, like the ‘hierarchy from the unmanifest Supreme God to the manifest God, Incarnations and Deities,’ and issues faced by Hindus, like denigration and genocide.  It will highlight Hinduism’s practical solutions like the simple Agnihotra sacrificial fire for current problems like nuclear fallouts.

[KALPASHABDA Kolkata Bangla Band]Calcutta, March 31, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) Kalpashabda are a five-member Bengali folk-fusion music group (the term "band" is often used in Calcutta for such groups for unknown reasons) from Kolkata. With the help of their artistry in a traditional folk posture, the group has successfully created melodious and mysterious symphonic tunes.

Indian_idol_logoGermantown, MD, Nov 19, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio) Young, beautiful and talented singer Torsha Sarkar from Bhagalpur came in third in India Idol 4 aired on Sony TV Channel in India from fall of 2008 to spring of 2009. Rajdeep Chatterjee from Jamshedpur also participated successfully in the 4th season of Indian Idol.

Rajdeep and Torsha performed live at the 2010 Durga Puja event organized by Sanskriti Bengali association of Washington DC Metro area. Sanskriti is one of the oldest Bengali associations in the United States.

Kolkata Bangla Band KAYA - Folk Rock Fusion

Germantown, Maryland, Oct 17, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio) The popular and award-winning music band KAYA from Kolkata performed live at the annual Durga Puja festival organized by Sanskriti of Washington DC Metropolitan area to a full auditorium at Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland on October 16, 2010.

Kaya is the winner of BIG Bangla Rock/Pop song of the year at IDEA BIG BANGLA MUSIC AWARDS held at Science City auditorium, Kolkata on Aug 13th, 2010. KAYA also composed and performed the music in Bappaditya Bandopadhyay's National Award winning film HOUSEFULL (2009) in which playback singer NILANJANA SARKAR received the best playback singer (female) award.

Sanskriti is one of oldest and highly respected Bengali cultural organizations in the United States, acclaimed for it's organizing abilities including hosting the best North American Bengali Conference (NABC) ever in 2004 - a feat that is expected widely to be surpassed by Sanskriti's organization of NABC 2011 once again.

Gaurav Chatterjee - (C) Washington Bangla Radio Though he is famous as Gabu, his nick name, the full name of this famous drummer from the reputed Kolkata Bengali Band LAKKHICHARA is Gaurab Chatterjee. Gabu is also a background score composer and music director of Kolkata Tollywood Bengali movies including KAGOJER BOU and NECKLACE (2010). Subhomoy Mukherjee of Washington Bangla Radio talks to Gaurav in this informal and intimate interview. It was a overcast Sunday morning. It was not raining though. The Ichhapur Headquarter of the Shevashram was as usual busy—patients flocked into the low cost medical facility, guardians waited into the waiting hutments for their day-scholar wards undergoing Sunday classes, the inmates were busy with their daily chores, some were cleaning the yards, some washing their clothes and spreading them on a piece of green field to dry in the open air.

Sukharanjan and Shyamal, two representative from the Devipur village, who are spearheading the movement there, had already reached the Ichhapur Ashram from Devipur on 10th July and had initiated the discussions with the Ashram authorities. As per their reports, since the last workshop they have achieved the followings:
