UN condemns murder of Pakistani journalist

Peshawar, Feb 9 (IBNS):The head of the United Nations agency in charge of defending press freedom on Wednesday condemned the recent death of a Pakistani journalist and called for measures to improve security conditions for reporters in the Asian country. 

Mukarram Khan Aatif was killed on Jan 17 while praying in a mosque in Peshawar. He had been a correspondent for the private television channel Dunya News and also worked for Deewa Radio, a Pashto-language station. 

Ban welcomes launch of Darfur mechanism

Al-Fashir, Feb 9 (IBNS): UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed on Wednesday the inauguration of the Darfur Regional Authority, a body intended to stimulate development and facilitate peace in the war-torn western region of Sudan. 

Ban said the launch of the authority in El Fasher marked an important milestone in the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), an agreement signed in Qatar last year between the Sudanese Government and the rebel Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM). 

UN experts express concern about trail of a Spanish judge

New York, Feb 9 (IBNS): A series of independent United Nations human rights experts on Wednesday voiced concern about the impact of the trial of a prominent Spanish judge on his independence, particularly his efforts to investigate more than 100,000 allegations of enforced disappearances during the country’s civil war and then under the regime of Francisco Franco. 

Serbia-Kosovo dialogue eases tension: UN

New York, Feb 9 (IBNS): The resumption of dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo has led to the easing of tensions on the ground, a senior United Nations official told the un Security Council on Wednesday, cautioning, however, that other significant political challenges continue to emerge. 

A dispute between Kosovo and Serbia over the control of two border crossings in northern Kosovo resulted in several violent clashes between local Serb residents and the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) last year. 

Need support for housing programme for Palestinians: Al-Nasser

New York, Feb 9 (IBNS): UN General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser on Wednesday called on countries to throw their support behind a United Nations housing programme for Palestinians, stressing that it will enhance not only their living conditions but also prospects for peace in the region. 

The Special Human Settlements Programme, led by UN-Habitat, seeks to improve the human settlements conditions of the Palestinian people while simultaneously contributing to bring peace, security and stability to the region.
